I grew up in Brooklyn, New York son of two retired artists: a photographer and an actress. We moved to NC in 2002. Eventually, I followed in their footsteps and started a career as an artist but at the time I didn’t realize that most artist’s didn’t live off of their work.
After going to school for a year and exhibiting in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, I dropped out and decided to try making a career as an artist. I showed in some small local galleries and artist run spaces, got my work collected by North Carolina Central’s Art Museum, and completed residencies but I wasn’t earning enough money consistently to be considered anything other than an amateur artist. I started studying business, and realized I had a product but I wasn’t marketing it. So I started studying marketing because I realized I needed a job and I wanted one that would teach me how to market my art.
I started reading books and watching youtube videos absorbing everything I could about social media marketing. Through basic strategies I increased my engagement and eventually got invited to a fellowship and residency paying a total of $9,500. With this minor success, I realized that social media marketing was valuable and in order to standardize my skills decided to take an 18 week digital marketing bootcamp from UNC. Now I’m hungry to combine my creative skills learned from 10+ years of art making with my digital marketing skills acquired through the bootcamp, to produce and analyze media, to help others and myself grow.
